DIY Magnesium Good Night Spray

My son and my husband have this gift… their head hits the pillow and they are out for the night. They can fall asleep like no one I have ever seen. My daughter and I on the other hand take a bit longer to sleep. I once read somewhere that people who have trouble sleeping are often more creative and intelligent. At least that’s what I like to tell my husband.

But seriously… part of my problem is my mind won’t stop racing. I often have to read at night until my eyes start getting drowsy before I can successfully fall asleep. Unless it’s leg day (which takes everything out of me and makes me want to eat the entire world and then sleep the night away) I am usually too wired to just lie down and go to sleep at night. I’ll take all the help I can get.

On really rough nights when I’m feeling a bit stressed I will take a melatonin before bed. Melatonin is a hormone your body makes which helps regulate sleep. Often people need a little boost in melatonin as they age. Taking just one of these little supplements seems to help a lot in my case.

Another supplement I like to take is magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral that many of us are low in. Our bodies need a 1:1 ration of magnesium to calcium. I get plenty of calcium in my diet but I’m lacking in magnesium. One way I like to boost my magnesium intake is by taking “Magnesium Calm“. This supplement also helps get bowl movements going. If you find yourself to be “stopped up” from time to time, this may be the supplement for you. I start with a small dose and slowly increase to 2 tsp at a time.

Magnesium deficiencies can cause all sorts of problems such as anxiety, muscle spasms, low energy, sleeping problems etc… Check out this post by Wellness Momma to read about 10 signs of magnesium deficiency to learn more.

Epson salt baths are another great way to get magnesium into your body. Here is a post I wrote about how to take a nice Epson salt detox bath. But not every one has time for a wonderful leisurely bath every few days.

Most nights I just use my DIY magnesium “goodnight” spray. It quickly absorbs into your skin without having to take a long bath. Using this spray at night has become an easy part of my bedtime routine. I just spray it (about 5 spritzes) onto my stomach and rub it into my skin clockwise. You can also spray and rub it into your legs but I find magnesium oil to be a bit itchy and I don’t like it on my legs. It doesn’t bother me or seem to itch on my stomach like it does elsewhere.

Magnesium spray is super simple to make.

All you need is:

Both Lavender and Orange essential oils can promote restfulness and calming. Lavender in some rare cases can have the opposite affect on some people so you might want to try diffusing some lavender at night once before deciding if you want to add it to your “goodnight” spray or not. 😉

How to make the spray:

  1. Place your funnel into the open spray bottle and pour magnesium into the bottle until you have filled it half way.
  2. Add 20 drops of the essential oil of your choice (lavender or orange).
  3. Fill the rest of your spray bottle with magnesium oil.
  4. Put the spray lid back on the bottle and shake to mix.

I use about 5 sprays on my stomach at night before bed and then (like I said before) rub it clockwise. You could also apply it to your legs or the bottom of your feet (whatever you are most comfortable with).

There you have it! Another simple DIY.

Lastly, I have one more tip that may help you sleep better at night.

Removing all electronic devices (smart phones, tablets etc) from the room can be helpful. Also, making sure you don’t have any other unnatural light in the room can help your body to know that it’s time to sleep.

I hope these tips help you to get a more restful goodnight sleep.

Yeah!!! I am glad you got this up! I remember talking about this at your fitness event. I added Lavender to my spray that I already had when I got home and figured I would give it a try. So this is awesome. Now I have a recipe to make my own! You rock!!! Blessings.

I am like your son and hubby – out like a light, however, my hubby doesn’t sleep well at all and it up and down at least 3 times a night. I need to check out this diffuser to see if it would make a difference.
