10 Body Care Ingredients to Avoid
Navigating body care products can be daunting. Especially with all the product greenwashing where they claim to be toxin free yet are loaded with things that are FDA approved yet not something you want ot be putting on your body day in and day out. Plus, lets face it, we can’t be perfect.

To make things a little easier I’ll let you in one 10
body care ingredients to avoid when trying to make the switch to a less toxic lifestyle.
- Aluminum– Has estrogen like effects that can disrupt healthy hormone function.
- Parabens– These can contribute to hormone imbalances.
- Ethanolamines– These are commonly found in foaming facial cleansers and are linked to liver cancer and organ toxicity. Look for names like DEA, TEA, and MEA.
- Phthalates– These are linked to ADHD, obesity, breast cancer, low IQ, diabetes, reproductive development issues, and male infertility.
- DMDM Hydrantoin and Urea– this is a preservative that releases formaldehyde. It can cause joint pain, skin allergies, loss of sleep and headaches.
- Mineral Oil– this sounds so natural yet it’s a petroleum byproduct. It coats the skin like plastic which prevents it from eliminating toxins.
- Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)– this is potentially a carcinogenic petroleum ingredient. It reduces the skin’s natural moisture factor, leading to premature aging, and it can leave you vulnerable to bacteria.
- Siloxanes– this is a reproductive toxicant.
- Synthetic Fragrances- these are often labeled as “fragrance and aren’t clear how they are made or what they come from. They can often mimic estrogen, trigger asthma, reduce sperm count, and can lead to reproductive malformation. They are linked to liver and breast cancer, obesity, and diabetes. Fetal exposure is linked to ADHD, Autism, and neurological disorders.
- Propylene Glycol– this can cause rashes, damage cell membranes, and can cause central nervous system damage in children.
