Steak Rub

It’s grilling season!… okay, so maybe it’s actually the beginning of winter and your grill is buried under the snow like mine. I started this post in the summer and had good intentions on posting it right away. Then we had a fantastic summer filled with pool side days and birthday celebrations. My post was then forgotten about. Until today….

I just ran out of my DIY “steak rub” and thought “I need to post a recipe on this simple little staple we use in our home all-the-time!

I use this stuff on everything from steak of course… to roasts in my instant pot. I also sprinkle it on burgers and homemade fries from time to time. It’s basically good on any beef as well as seasoning for potatoes.

Fun tip… when I finish cooking steak in the cast iron, I sauté up some mushrooms in the same pan for what my husband calls the “best mushrooms ever!” It gives the mushrooms a beef and seasoning flavor he loves. I personally despise mushrooms but the rest of my family loves them and these are their favorite.

This mix is super simple and doesn’t have a bunch of yucky ingredients like MSG or preservatives. I like to prep a batch of DIY steak rub in a small mason jar ahead of time so that I don’t have to make it every time I want to use it. We buy a 1/4 of a grass fed cow at a time from Don Buck at the Rochester Farmer’s Market. It’s quality beef and the only way I can afford grass fed steaks. Yum!

Here are the ingredients for the steak rub:

  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tsp coriander
  • 4 tsp red pepper
  • 4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 2 TBS plus 2 tsp paprika (I prefer the smoked paprika from Trader Joes but you can use whatever you like)
  • 2 TBS plus 2 tsp sea salt We buy our Redmonds Real Sea Salt at Thrive Market
  • optional: 2 tsp cayenne pepper (if you like it spicier) I tend to leave this out to make it kid and my mother-in-law friendly. I can always add cayenne to my own plate if I need more of a kick.

Directions:

Use a funnel to pour all your ingredients into a glass mason jar and shake.

Could it be any more simple?

So good!
